Giurgeni Monastery – the place that houses the miracle-working icon of the Mother of God with three eyes and two mouths

God often chooses simple and humble places to make His name known and show His divine power. One such place is the Giurgeni Monastery in the village of the same name, located in Neamț county. The protector of this settlement is the Mother of God herself, whose miracle-working icon attracts pilgrims and visitors from all parts of the country.

The Giurgiu Monastery was founded in the 18th century. Its name comes from the boyar Giurgiu, a faithful man, who donated part of his orchard to monks, helping them build a small hermitage here. Initially, the hermitage consisted of a small wooden church and a few cells for its inhabitants. Being merciful by nature and loving God, the boyar Giurgiu sends his argents to help the monks work in the fields.

The first attestation of the Giurgiu Hermitage takes place in 1809, when the settlement became part of the diocese of Romanu. After 1850, the hermitage was taken over by nuns.
It received the status of a monastery in 1936. The monastery and the houses of the nuns were deserted after decree 410 of 1959. Only in 1993 at the request of the faithful, the Giurgeni Monastery was reopened. In 2000, the abbotship was taken over by Father Antonie Jeflea.
A priceless scent, given to the monastery on August 6, 1831, would make this place known throughout the country. It is about an icon of the Mother of God, which soon showed itself to be a miracle worker. The first divine miracle performed with this icon is related to the very day it was given to the monastery, when the Transfiguration of the Savior is celebrated.
According to local tradition, a third eye miraculously appeared on this icon – below the left eye of the Blessed One, and a second mouth, half-open, above the mouth of the natural one.
They were not added by human hands to the already painted icon, but appeared through divine intervention.

Thanks to this miraculous phenomenon, it got the name “Icon of the Mother of God with three eyes and two mouths”. It is a unique icon in the whole world.

The icon has a specific representation of the “Odigitria” type (which means “Leader” or “Guide”), according to the model originally painted by the Saint Luke the Evangelist.

The Mother of God holds the Baby Jesus on her left arm, pointing to Him with her right hand, hence the name “Guide”. Archimandrite Antonie Jeflea, who moved to the Lord on February 18, 2018, relates a miracle of the Mother of God that he witnessed in the first year he came to the monastery. A six-year-old child from Vaslui, who was mute from birth, was brought by his parents to the monastery.

After the performance of the Holy Mass, the child spoke for the first time, asking his mother to raise him to the icon of the Mother of God to kiss her.

The father very nicely explains the meaning of the new elements appearing on the icon of the Mother of God: “The third eye is the one with which he watches over the world with mercy and endless kindness, and the two mouths, one closed and the other half-open, show silence – on the one hand – and speaking with purpose in the right faith – on the other hand”.
