“Don’t wash dishes in someone else’s house…”

Old customs that elders said could bring bad luck to the house
Since ancient times, people have had all kinds of beliefs and customs related to the house, luck and peace of the family.
Maybe you’ve heard from your grandparents:
“Don’t sweep at night!”
“Don’t leave the knife on the table!”
“Don’t whistle in the house!”
or…
“Don’t wash dishes in someone else’s house!”
For some, they’re just superstitions.
For others, they’re old traditions that hide wisdom and respect for the energy of the house.
It was said that when you wash dishes in someone else’s house, you “take away” or “disturb” the peace and luck of that family. The elders believed that the water used to wash dishes carries the energy of the house and that certain gestures made by strangers can bring tension, quarrels or deprivation.
In some areas of Romania, women avoided letting guests wash the dishes after a meal, believing that this “washes away the good in the house.”
Also from the old days, it is said that:
it is not good to leave dishes unwashed overnight
do not sweep towards the door when a loved one is away
do not take out the trash after sunset
it is not good to borrow salt or bread in the evening
Even though many people no longer believe in such customs today, they continue to be passed down from generation to generation, as part of the charm and mystery of Romanian traditions. 🕯️
Maybe some superstitions do not change destiny…
But they remind us of the times when people viewed the home as a holy place, full of energy, peace and blessing.
